The Montana Matriach. After 10 kids and 40+ grandkids, she now gets to supervise the work parties.

Montana Girls…Born Tough, with a Side of Frill.

*This week’s blog isn’t really about an event or specific experience. Instead, it’s just me telling you a story. Don’t worry, we’ll get back to business next week.*

I’m a true, blue, through and through Montana girl. I was raised on the Rocky Mountain Front or as many like to refer to it: the east side. Many Montana girls think that we’re tough, but I think that’s even more true for those of us from the east side.

And while I am from the east side (holla!) I was a girly little girl. My older sister was a tomboy, so I happily took on the role of the girly child. And while I’ve become less girly over time, there are a few things that have remained consistent: my dimples, the gap in my teeth and my messy hair.

Sisters.

Though I was a bit more prissy than my sissy, we grew up working hard.

Work was something that bonded our family together. Sure, we had family parties, but many of our gathering were dubbed “WORK PARTIES.” Where, as the name implies, we’d all get together and help someone in the family with a project.

Staining the new floor at the store.

Over the years, this included painting, tearing down old buildings, picking rock, fencing, moving cattle and fixing up a feedlot or two.

The Montana Matriach. After 10 kids and 40+ grandkids, she now gets to supervise the work parties.

And call us crazy (because we’re crazy fun), but this was something that was and is still much loved.

Proof of crazy fun.

Anyway, to this day people laugh (or simply don’t believe it) when I tell them where I’m from. This could be because I like to wear gowns and high heels (thank you mom) or because they expect something a little different than me. I’ve even been asked if my cowboy boots are for show or if I actually wear them. To which I say: they’re legit.

My father...helping him check cows for 30 minutes always turned into at least a 3 hour adventure.

I realize I may be partial, but I think Montana girls know what’s up. We’re a sweet, spicy and fresh made up of wide open country, big hugs, a helping hand, genuine friendliness and a side of lip gloss. Don’t believe it? Come see for yourself.

The GreenMachine.

Bar Stool Races? Yes, Please.

Last weekend, I loaded my car, pulled on my snowboots, wrapped a scarf around my head and headed north. My destination: The Canyon.

The Canyon is the “Gateway to Glacier” and includes the communities of Columbia Falls, Hungry Horse, Coram, Martin City and West Glacier. Not only are these town small and charming, but they remind me of home…which I find completely lovely.

But I wasn’t just headed to The Canyon for the heck of it.

Last weekend was their 33rd Annual Cabin Fever Days. And while there were quite a few different activities happening, I had one thing and one thing only on my mind: bar stool races.

The mere name of this event made me want to know more. And, because I’m curious, see it for myself. And I will tell you, I was not disappointed. Check out the photos below…

This kid was by far the most graceful of any competitor.

The GreenMachine.

These guys were cool. As shown on their bus.

Rumor has it that this gentleman (who is very nice, by the way and didn’t crash once) has participated in every bar stool race since the event started.

Leader of the Pack. Vroom, vroom.

See why I loved it so much?

Local folks.

Not only were these gentlemen dressed festively, they kept the racers and event rolling smoothly.

Mountain men.

And with that, another Cabin Fever Days has come and gone. But if you want to see it for yourself (something I highly recommend), mark your calendar for February 10 – 12, 2012.

See you at the races…maybe even with my own bar stool.

Big Red.

Montana Lovin’

Here at Glacier Country, we like to be crafty.

Our most recent craft was making custom Glacier Country, Montana insulated mugs.

Big Red.

These mugs are cool for a few reasons:

1) This winter has been COLD. And these mugs keep our drinks HOT.
2) They come in several colors.
3) We’re giving them away!

Our first drawing is going to be held on Monday, February 14 in honor of the DAY OF LOVE. To enter, we’re asking folks to share the reason why they love Western Montana. Simply go to our facebook page, find the mug post and enter the reasons you love Big Sky Country.

Here are a few of the responses we’ve received so far…
“Montana is my paradise…”

“I could write a book on what I love about Montana. There is no place in the world like Montana and it is a place that I totally have a love affair with.”

“Montana is naturally lovable…”

“I love the people, honest and true Americans…”

So please, share away for your chance to win a GlacierMT mug…Happy weekend!

Valentine's Day = lots of cake, chocolate covered strawberries and flowers.

Valentine’s Day

We all know it’s coming. Same day, every year. And it doesn’t really come quietly either – it comes with red and pink hearts, boxes of chocolates, jewelry commercials, red roses and of course, lots of love, hugs and kisses. To which I say, heck yes.
