Storytime: Montana Style

Over the last several weeks, we’d been reading stories from travelers, writers and bloggers about the beauty, fun and experience that is Western Montana. Stories heralding everything from our brewery scene to places to view wildlife and red jammer tours to the best towns to grab great food.

And we love it.

Here’s a sampling of some of the latest stories on Western Montana…

Seven Days in Montana’s Beer Country – One woman’s journey of how beer brought her to Montana…and how it’ll bring her back again.

USA Today – One of the best places to view wildlife is the National Bison Range.

BootsnAll – Looking for good food in a small Montana town? Look no further than Whitefish.

Camelsandchocolate.com – Flathead Lake and hiking the overlook to Kerr Dam.

Highonadventure.com – Touring Glacier National Park on Glacier Park, Inc.’s Great Glacier Adventure.

So even if you haven’t made it to Montana this summer, you can still feel connected to the high mountain peaks, hearty people and plentiful activities of Glacier Country. And when you’re ready to come visit, we’ll be here waiting.

Happy weekend.

Ready to raft!

A Missoula Good Time

Last week, I met up with five lovely ladies for a trip centered around the garden city of Missoula. We only had a few days together and decided to pack in as much action, character and food as we could.

And pack it in we did.

For the first night of our trip, we headed up to Ten Spoon Winery in the Rattlesnake Valley. While the wine (all organic mind you) got rave reviews, the thing that stood out to me the most was the setting. Located just minutes from downtown Missoula, it gave me the feeling that we were miles away from the hustle and bustle of modern life.

The vineyard at Ten Spoon Winery.

And because we needed to work off our food and wine, the next morning we hiked the “M” on Mount Sentinel. While we got our legs burning and our sweat on under Montana’s big blue sky and beaming sun, we were rewarded with a beautiful view of the city at the top.

A few of my traveling companions after making it to the M.

We also toured the Smokejumper Visitor Center and Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation Visitor Center, hit up Downtown Tonight, took fly-fishing lessons from Grizzly Hackle, enjoyed the local Saturday markets and rafted the iconic Blackfoot River with 10,000 Waves. I also had the smoothest trail ride of my life with Dunrovin Ranch on their Tennessee Walking Horses.

Ready to raft!

Not to be left out, we gave much of our attention to Missoula’s incredible restaurants, with stops at Red Bird Wine Bar for their champagne fondue (one of my all time faves), The Catalyst (nothing says summer like their Caesar salad–for reals), Scotty’s Table (their lemon cheesecake is smooth, creamy and light), Hob Nob, The Shack, Finn & Porter (where I had the best yogurt/granola/fresh berry combination to date) and Lolo Creek Steakhouse where the highlight–besides the steak–was the coconut macaroon sundae. So delicious.

It was one Missoula good time.

Until next week,

Paddling Whitefish Lake

A Trip to Glacier National Park & Whitefish

A few weeks ago, we rounded up some friends from Montana and across the country and made our way to Glacier National Park. The group was a tad nervous, as the skies and forecast really seemed to want to put a damper on our fun time. But we were a stalwart bunch and couldn’t be deterred.

We grabbed our beanies, down jackets, rain gear and headed northeast to the community of East Glacier. Having grown up just two hours south of East Glacier, I spent quite a bit of time there during the summers when I was just a little blond bundle.

While I looked forward to staying at Glacier Park Lodge when I was younger, I think I look forward to it even more today. It reminds me of a simpler time…when my hair was always messy, my gap was even bigger (I managed to knock out my front teeth when I was younger) and summer vacation was greeted with open arms, excited anticipation and big plans.

Today, going to the lodge is much the same. I look forward to each visit with a touch of giddiness that remains with me, even as the years pass by.

During this visit, we were able to take a red bus tour with perhaps the cutest jammer driver of all time: Jammer Joe.

Jammer Joe

He chauffeured our group to St. Mary, Jackson Glacier Overlook and Two Medicine, regaling us with history of the park, tales of the past and his sweet voice as it crooned a few country songs.

Two Medicine, Glacier National Park

After two days in East Glacier, we headed to our next destination on the west side of the park, the appropriately named community of West Glacier. We met up with a friend of mine, Ryan, at Glacier Outdoor Center and were given fly-fishing lessons for the next few hours. Two of the folks in my group landed fish…and while I didn’t catch a fish, I did land a tree.

Connor and Andrija perfecting a cast

After an evening in West Glacier and a morning hike with Glacier Guides, we rafted the Middle Fork of the Flathead River with Great Northern Whitewater Raft & Resort on waters that are best described as epic, fun and offering a kick-in-the-pants good time.

From there, we drove the short 30 minutes to Whitefish where we checked into The Lodge at Whitefish Lake. The next morning we headed up to Whitefish Mountain Resort for the 6-zip line tour. For our first zip, we were greeted with rain. And while it kept us company for the remainder of the morning, the zip line tour was an absolute delight!

We heart zip lining

Fog covered the mountain on a few of the lines…the longest coming in at 1,900′ and as zippers, you couldn’t see the landing platform until you were almost upon it after coming out of the fog. And to be honest, we didn’t mind the fog. It added to the excitement of each line and our determination to beat our zipping partner to the platform.

We ended back at the base lodge, where we dried off and relaxed after our adrenaline, giggle, race-filled morning.

After zipping, we headed back to town where we split up, with some biking The Whitefish Trail and others taking advantage of a break in the clouds by paddling a canoe on Whitefish Lake. As this was the last day of our journey together, we headed to McGarry’s Roadhouse for a delicious dinner, followed by several helpings of dessert.

Paddling Whitefish Lake

To my traveling partners, you were such a delight! If ever I have to spend five days in the pouring rain, complete with gray skies, I hope once again that trip will be taken with you.

Hope to see you in Montana again, soon. Until then, happy trails.

Oh, love.

A Glacier National Park Family Reunion

We Came, We Saw, We Hugged.

Last weekend, we rounded up the troops from Montana, Utah and Wyoming and headed for Glacier National Park for our first annual “Allen Family Reunion.” And boy was it sweet!

Our rafting crew! The water was fast and awesome.

Not only did the sun shine on us nearly the entire time (except for a slight downpour Saturday afternoon), but Lake McDonald was as smooth as glass, the air was clean and fresh and 45 of our family members gathered together for a few days of bonding, hugging, singing and playing.

Cousins Rule.

Our days included golfing, hiking, rafting, biking, boating, campfires, guitars, baby holding and plenty of teasing in one of the most beautiful locations in Montana: Glacier National Park.

Oh, love.

In one word: perfection.

Welcome to Glacier National Park!

Montana: Family Reunion

On the roster for this weekend…Family Reunion!

This girl is headed to Glacier National Park for some family bonding time, kissing and hugging on aunts and uncles, cousins and cute babies.

Welcome to Glacier National Park!

And while we’re there, we’ll also be taking in some whitewater rafting, golfing, hiking, the Cast-Off at Glacier Outdoor Center and boat tours.

We heart family bonding - last year's trip to Two Medicine Valley.

We’ll also be standing in awe of the incredible beauty that is the Crown of the Continent, breathing in its fresh mountain air and reveling in the scenery and majesty found in the park.

Hello, serenity.

Wishing you all a happy weekend.

David Thompson Days
For folks looking to stroll 200 years back in time, head to Thompson Falls to participate in David Thompson Days, held July 2, where re-enactors replicate the lifestyle of early North American exploration, survival and trade. As part of the festivities, you’ll see historic displays and demonstrations, primitive arts and crafts, live music and games. David Thompson Days take a special look at explorer David Thompson (1770 – 1857), who traveled more than 50,000 miles by foot, horse and canoe as he mapped many of the uncharted territories in upper North America.

North American Indian Days
This year, North American Indian Days marks its 60th annual celebration July 7 – 10 on the Blackfeet Nation in Browning. One of the largest gatherings of North American tribes, the event provides insight into Blackfeet traditions, with dancing, traditional games and a rodeo.

A Montana Memorial Day Weekend

Happy Memorial Day weekend!

From the girls of Glacier Country to you, we hope this weekend kicks off your summer right.

Happy Memorial Day!

Whether you’re spending time with your family (that’s what this girl will be doing), hanging out at the lake with friends, enjoying a backyard BBQ or taking a weekend getaway with your sugar, I hope it’s awesome. Especially as this weekend is the official kick-off to summer.

And if you’re looking for something to do in our neck of the woods, here’s an overview of events, activities and good clean fun for your Montana Memorial Day weekend.

Bigfork Whitewater Festival
Taking place in Bigfork this Saturday and Sunday, the Bigfork Whitewater Festival is a kayaking race on the ‘Wild Mile’ of the Swan River that runs through Bigfork. With all of the snow we’ve had this winter, rest assured there will be some pretty stellar whitewater for the paddlers. Saturday will feature beginner and expert slalom, while Sunday will showcase a downriver race, triathlon race and boater’s cross. Plus, there will be great food and entertainment throughout the area all weekend long.

We dig kayaking.

St. Regis Annual Flea Market
This Saturday, Sunday and Monday marks Montana’s largest flea market in the community of St. Regis. The flea market boasts more than 200 vendors selling everything from antiques to arts and crafts.

Loon & Fish Festival

This little Montana man has already stolen my heart. Aunt Tia loves him!

Montana Men: I’m on a Mission

It’s almost summer here in Montana. Okay, not really, but it is coming quickly…either way, summer is on my mind. And because I love it so much, I feel like I should set a goal for “Summer 2011.”

My quest is this…to find the cutest of the cute, handsomest of the handsome and manliest of the manly men that Montana has to offer. (It’s affectionately called Mantana for a reason).

This little Montana man has already stolen my heart. Aunt Tia loves him!

We have some cuties here in Big Sky Country, from Whitefish to Miles City and Bozeman to Lewistown. My theory is that here, with majestic mountains, sweeping plains, fresh air and pure water, the men just grow a little better.

Clarification: I am an equal opportunist when it comes to men…I practically love them all, but there’s something about a Montana man that sweeps me off my feet.

Here’s what I dig about Montana boys…
1) They’re strong.
2) They have good manners. (Well, most of them do anyway. ;) )
3) Chivalry is not dead here. (If it is, we’ll call my mama…she’ll set any non-chivalrous men straight).
4) They are versatile. Whether it’s kayaking a river, starting a fire or busting a move on the dance floor, they’ve got it covered.
5) Their reputation precedes them. I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve heard, “Ooh, Montana? You have the cutest cowboys!” Agreed.

So for the next few months, I’ll be packing my camera around in my quest to capture, through the art of photography of course, the cream of the crop of Montana men.

Oh and don’t worry about thanking me, I’m happy to do it.

A happy toddler.

Portland + Montana=Direct Flights

We got some exciting news this week: Alaska Airlines announced that it is adding seasonal DAILY, DIRECT flights from Portland, Oregon to Missoula, Montana. The flights will start June 5 and continue through August 27. Can we get a woohoo? (woohoooo!)

We’re completely tickled about this new offering! Not only will it allow Montana residents to jump a quick flight to Portland and the beautiful Oregon cost, but it will provide Portland area residents with a short, direct flight before they’re out exploring Western Montana.

And as an added bonus, passengers in either direction will be flying Horizon Air’s Q400 turboprop. This plane is one of the most environmentally friendly regional aircrafts, burning 30 percent to 40 percent less fuel than comparable jets. Very cool.

Because we’re so stoked about the this new flight, we’ve put together a list of 10 Not-To-Be-Missed Western Montana Activities & Attractions.

1) Check out our breweries. Portland is a great beer city and we’d love for you to taste some offerings from our local craft breweries. Plus, we dig the the names of our brews: Golden Grizzly Ale, Moose Drool, Dancing Trout and Old Stache Porter. (Yep, there’s a mustache on the bottle).

Image from www.tamarackbrewing.com

2) Rub elbows with smokejumpers at the Smokejumper Visitor Center in Missoula. During the summer, the smokejumpers train here before being called out to fires, most often found in remote mountainous terrain. (Hands down, one of my favorite attractions in all of Missoula).

3) From Missoula, you’re within easy reach of three blue-ribbon trout streams. Whether you’re looking to cast a line or float the waters, check out the Blackfoot, Clark Fork and Bitterroot rivers. Take a rafting or kayak trip with 10,000 Waves Raft & Kayak Adventure. For fishing guides in the area, click here.

4) Hike the M. This short hike on Mount Sentinel is one of the most popular in the state. It also provides a beautiful view of the Missoula Valley. After you’re done, reward yourself with ice cream from The Big Dipper.

Enjoying the view from the top.

5) Eat a Nap’s burger. These burgers make my mouth water just thinking about them. Located in Hamilton (about an hour’s drive south of Missoula), they are totally worth the drive. Trust me.

6) Visit the National Bison Range. This range is one of the oldest in the nation and is home to 300 – 500 head of bison, as well as black bears, antelope, deer and more. Plus, the views are serenely beautiful.

The view from Red Sleep Mountain Drive.

7) Visit Flathead Lake. Take a boat cruise on The Shadow at KwaTaqNuk Resort in Polson, wade in the water or pick up perfectly ripe Flathead Cherries to snack on during your travels.

8) Ride the zips at Whitefish Mountain Resort. The resort offers tours on the “Original 4″ or the full “6 Zips.” The 6 zip tours has an 1,800-foot long line that takes zippers 300 feet above the ground. If you have little ones? Take them down the Alpine Slide. They’re sure to love it!

A happy toddler.

9) For a quiet and beautiful drive, travel through the Seeley-Swan Valley. It’s home to countless lakes, charming little towns and endless outdoor recreation. One of my favorite activities: rent a canoe in town and paddle the Clearwater River Canoe Trail.

10) If you’re coming to Western Montana, Glacier National Park is a definite must see. The park has more than 700 miles of trails, plenty of lakes for water fun, boat tours, wildlife and historic lodges. Numerous outfitters also offer guided tours in and around the park, from red bus tours to trail rides and helicopter tours to rafting and fishing trips.
