A red canoe sitting empty

While others prefer the adrenaline rush of kayaking or rafting, there's nothing like enjoying Montana's natural beauty on calm lake waters in a canoe. Canoeists should wear a life vest (personal flotation device, or PFD),be able to swim, and understand the hazards of moving water and hypothermia. Life vests designed for canoeing and kayaking are lightweight and have wide arm holes for full-range-of-motion paddling. Avoid those old orange, puffy life vests, which bunch up around the wearer’s head when in the water.
