MOOSE

Moose

If the plural of goose is geese, shouldn't the plural of moose be meese? Actually, no. The plural of moose is actually "moose." If you see a moose, you won't soon forget it: moose are the largest antlered animals in the world. Males can easily weigh 1,200 - 1,600 pounds, and females may reach 800 - 1,300 pounds. It's easy to tell the males and females apart; only the males have antlers, which are huge, flat and dish shaped. Exactly how huge? The largest antlers can span 6 feet from tip to tip. Moose begin to grow their antlers in the early summer, and by summers-end these antlers will have reached their full size. During the period of growth the antlers are covered in a soft, fuzzy skin called velvet, which contain blood vessels that help disperse nutrients to the growing antlers. When the antlers are finished growing, the velvet sheds away leaving the antler bare.

Moose mostly live in forested areas with plenty of cover from snowfall in the winter, and spend most of their time in meadows and marshy areas to help keep cool during the warmer summer months.. Despite their size, they are also great swimmers. A moose's diet is made up mainly of underwater vegetation; when feeding, they often dunk their heads underwater, and can keep their heads submerged for more than three minutes. When not feeding on water vegetation the moose also eats leaves, twigs, and tree buds. During the colder months when food is scarce, twigs and the bark of many trees help to sustain this massive creature.

Moose Safety

If you see a moose, however, be very cautious. They have poor eyesight, but they make up for it with their good hearing and strong sense of smell. The males can be very aggressive, and females are extremely protective of their young. Because of their sheer size, moose can be very dangerous, and they aren't as timid as many other wild animals. In fact, moose are probably more unpredictable than any other animal in the wild, and getting too close to them can be extremely dangerous. Watch from a safe distance and pay close attention when you are fishing.
