SINCE WELL BEFORE Montana was a state, the Clark Fork River region attracted explorers, including Lewis and Clark and Canadian David Thompson. Two centuries later, it still does. Motorcyclists and RVers cruise Highway 200, pulling off to gawk at distant peaks and peer at bighorn sheep. Kayakers paddle stretches of whitewater through Alberton Gorge, and anglers battle fish in the shadows of towering cliffs. Boaters cruise Noxon Reservoir and collect rocks along the shore. Cyclists ride the Hiawatha Rail-Trail through tunnels and over trestle bridges. Hikers pick huckleberries in the mountains above Trout Creek.

In winter, the spirit of discovery remains undaunted, with skiing at Lookout Pass, backcountry snowmobiling, and long soaks in the natural hot springs of Paradise and Hot Springs, Montana.

Of course, today’s explorers will uncover things their predecessors did not. Friendly towns bustle with festivals, events and shoppers. Area museums, historic buildings and cultural attractions reveal the explorers who came before you. Plus, there are a variety of hotels, lodges, bed and breakfasts, and restaurants to ensure you need never sleep on the ground or hunt for your own food.
