LODGING
Historic Hotels
Architects took the mountains' majesty to heart when they designed the historic hotels and lodges in Glacier and Waterton Lakes national parks.
Glacier Park, Inc. (GPI) operates Prince of Wales Hotel in Waterton, five of six lodging facilities in Glacier, and Glacier Park Lodge in East Glacier. Please call (406) 756-2444 for reservations; or www.glacierparkinc.com. American Express, Visa, MasterCard and Discover cards accepted.
It is a good idea to make reservations six months to a year in advance, particularly for July and August. Rooms may become available due to cancellations, but call early to ensure you have a place to stay. For information about GPI restaurants, accommodations and tours, stop at information desks located in the park hotels and motor inns.
Glacier Park Lodge
"The Big Tree Lodge," as the Blackfeet knew it, amazes visitors with its lobby lined with gigantic Douglas fir pillars. The lodge, located in East Glacier, was built between 1912 and 1914 and now has 161 rooms. There is a swimming pool, a regulation nine-hole golf course and a nine-hole pitch-and-putt course that runs through landscaped gardens. A restaurant, lounge and gift shop are offered as well as horseback tours. The lodge is open from mid-May to late September.
Many Glacier Hotel
One of the park's glaciers looms over its cliffside perch near this Swiss-style hotel. Located in Many Glacier Valley, the hotel's tall picture windows look out at Swiftcurrent Lake and a choppy sea of peaks. Many Glacier Valley is the center of the largest network of trails in Glacier, with five major valleys leading to glaciers, passes and lakes. The hotel, a National Historic Landmark, is the largest lodge in the parks with its 215 rooms. A restaurant, snack bar and lounge as well as nightly entertainment, a gift shop and boat and horseback tours are available. The hotel is open June to September. Note: The hotel will undergo foundation, infrastructure and life-safety improvements over the next several years during the off-season, but will remain open during the summer months.
Swiftcurrent Motor Inn
Swiftcurrent Motor Inn is just a short walk from the Many Glacier Hotel. It has 88 rooms and private cabins. The inn's front door is just a stone's throw away from the Iceberg Lake trailhead, one of the most dramatic and popular hikes in the parks. This facility was built as a rest stop for car travelers when the automobile became a popular mode of transportation in the 1930s. A general store was added later on and more motel rooms were also added as the Many Glacier Valley's popularity increased. It features a restaurant, camp store, laundromat and a common shower house, plus access to Many Glacier Hotel's restaurants and visitor services. It is open from June to September.
Prince of Wales Hotel
Sitting on a promontory overlooking Waterton Lake, this European-style, seven-story hotel has huge picture windows in the lobby which frame a view of the seven-mile-long string of mountains that ring the lake. Built in 1927, the hotel was named for Great Britain's King Edward VIII, while he was Prince of Wales. This National Historic Site (Canada) has 86 rooms and is a good base for golf, horseback rides and boat tours. A restaurant, lounge, English-style tearoom and gift shop are available. The hotel is open from mid-May to late September.
Rising Sun Motor Inn
The St. Mary Valley, with its snaking lake and bright-red mountains, is the scenic attraction of Rising Sun Motor Inn. The inn has 72 motel and cabin rooms and is located adjacent to Going-to-the-Sun Road on the eastern side of Glacier, close to St. Mary Visitor Center. A coffee shop, camp store, public showers and a gift shop are available. You can book guided tours of Glacier National Park and boat tours conveniently at the front desk. The inn is open from June to September.
Lake McDonald Lodge Complex
George Snyder built the first hotel and hunting lodge in Glacier in 1895, when the area was still wild country. Huge logs support the lobby's high ceiling and the hotel is still decorated with animal trophies. Famous American Western artist, Charles M. Russell, is said to have drawn the pictographs on the lobby's immense stone fireplace. A short walkway leads to the Lake McDonald shore. The Lake McDonald complex has 100 rooms in the main building, cabins and an adjacent motor inn. A restaurant, coffee shop, lounge, gift shop and camp store as well as boat and horseback tours and rentals are offered. It is open from June to late September.
Village Inn
The 36 rooms of the motel, the Village Inn, have panoramic views of Lake McDonald Valley and the Continental Divide. Some rooms contain kitchenettes. It is located in Apgar Village near gift shops and Apgar Visitor Center. Horse rides and boat rentals are available nearby. It is open from mid-May to late September.
Apgar Village Lodge
Located in scenic Apgar Village, this privately-owned lodge has 48 units, including 26 kitchenettes. It is run by the Lundgren family of West Glacier; please call (406) 888-5484 for more information and reservations. American Express, MasterCard, Visa and Discover are accepted. Rooms have televisions and showers. There are no telephones. It is open from early May to early October.
