CERTAIN TOWNS have a way of gripping you. Perhaps it’s the locals’ carefree attitude. Maybe it’s the unique stuff you find in their galleries and shops. Or possibly it’s that every activity you love is gloriously abundant there. In Missoula’s case, it’s likely to be all of these reasons.

Missoula is Glacier Country’s largest community. Home to the University of Montana, it’s a center of commerce and culture. Here, you can catch a play or concert just about any night. Our restaurants treat patrons to food San Franciscans would envy. Shopping options include everything from local gems to national icons. And kids love visiting the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and A Carousel for Missoula. For a bit of history, visit Travelers’ Rest State Park near Lolo (an important waypoint on the Lewis and Clark Expedition), Holt Heritage Museum and historic Fort Missoula.

The town is also located within striking distance of major trailheads, prime trout fisheries and more public wildlands than you could cover in a thousand vacations. In winter, the days get shorter, but the to-do list does not. Montana Snowbowl, featured recently in Ski Magazine, is 15 minutes away. Pattee Canyon has miles of groomed cross-country trails. And Missoula’s historic downtown swings into high gear for the holidays.
