WORDS AND PHOTOS can’t capture the experience that is Glacier National Park. It is a singular place of towering waterfalls, emerald valleys, pyramid peaks and abundant wildlife. To believe it, you must see it. And even then, you may not.
Scenery is the main attraction here, and the Park offers many ways to take it in — 700 miles of hiking trails, scenic boat tours, guided rafting adventures, horse pack trips and the historic Red Buses. Most remarkable is Going-to-the-Sun Road, a historic byway that crosses the Park over Logan Pass. Generally open June through October, it is easily the most scenic drive you’ll ever take.
Glacier’s history captivates, too. Glacier shares the title of world’s first International Peace Park with Waterton Lakes National Park (Canada); it’s also a world heritage site and home to several historic lodges and backcountry chalets. And in case you’re wondering, the Park is open in winter for snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and just plain gawking.
Just outside the Park, you’ll want to nose around the communities of East Glacier, Polebridge, St. Mary and West Glacier. These towns offer a range of lodging options, as well as gift shops, outfitters and down-home restaurants.
